Poppies

For the beauty of each house
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flow'r,
Sun and moon, and stars of light.
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

We are very grateful to be serving in the Leeds, England mission and to be working with such wonderful YSA. The wards and people are all so kind to us. The weather is cool but we still manage to find beauty all around us.  Here's some of the beauty we enjoyed.

Boot Sale

Here is a picture of a car boot sale not far from our home. Many people park their cars and sale goods from the trunk. I found a ring to replace the one I left at home. Pete found some nice art supplies.
notice the cool field behind, full of sheep grazing.

York & Howard Castle

Castle Howard is a stately home (castle) in North Yorkshire, England, 15 miles north of York. The weather was perfect, 85 degrees. Everyone told us to enjoy the weather because it will change. We did enjoy the castle and the warm weather. It was a perfect p-day outing.

York's Shambles Street

York Cathedral Minster. We attended a service that evening and listened to the beautiful music

Sunday Institute Fireside with Brother and Sister Turncliff & Monday FHE
This was a great fireside for all the YSA. Brother Turncliff is an area 70. He and his wife were led by the spirit as they shared some wonderful insights on identity to the YSA. Afterwards, we had refreshments (lots of sweet and savory) for everyone.
Monday home evening was small. So many of the YSA are packing and moving. The institute has shorter open hours so that's why we have more time to help the missionaries teach and site see. We enjoy the students that have stayed put and continually attend activities and lessons with us.

Preston
Brother McMorn, institute director, invited us to go with him to Preston, England on Tuesday. We needed permission from the mission president since Preston is out of the Leeds mission boundaries. I wanted to go to the temple and do the sealings that I brought with me. I had 47 names to do. The sealer kept asking us to stay and help longer. Elder Carrier and Brother McMorn were needed in the ceiling room to help get other's work done. So we did many more than my 47 names during the 3 hours we spent doing the sealing work.
After the temple, Brother McMorn took us to lunch at a lovely, traditional place. We had turkey, roast beef, ham, yorkshire pudding, potatoes, and many vegetables.  It was a traditional English dinner that was delicious.
It was raining during the time we were in the temple but when we came outside after the work was done it was beautiful blue skies.

Preston Temple

First Latter-day Saints in Britain. We're in a park near the river Ripple where many converts were baptized.

place where people ran down to see people baptized in the River Ripple.

President Hinckley's missionary apartment

building where evil spirit were cast out. Still looks dark and abandoned.

Monument where many missionaries preached the gospel.

This is a plaque marking the site of the Cockpit. Originally used for cock fighting till the temperance movement. The Saints met her in Sept 1837 for a few months. This is where the first mission conference was held on the 25 Dec 1837 and the Word of Wisdom was taught.

Farci Night with the Elders
After arriving home from Preston, we entertained the elders and their Farci friends. There was a couple good friends learning about the Church with us in the institute.
Guest Chef & Institute Class
Wednesday the guest chef cooked a dish called, Toad in a hole. It's a sausage dish with yorkshire pudding and gravy. I really liked it.
My family search class only had 3 students. Those that attended seemed to enjoy. Elder Carrier's class only had one person come.
It's a small group but quantity doesn't make quality.

Artwork outside the Institute building
Elder Carrier convinced the sisters that we needed to do something outside the institute building so that more people would understand what our building is all about. Sister Niebarger is a great artist and Elder Carrier has some talent with art too. So they set up easels and sketched buildings. Those who stopped by were approached by Sister Teo or myself. Sister Teo was able to get two new Chinese friends from this unique approach to missionary work. The sisters want to do it every week.

Pancake Breakfast and Devotional
The pancake breakfast on Friday was well attended and the devotional was good. Elder Carrier showed the conference talk by President Oaks called, Small and Simple Things. It's such a great way to bring the spirit....fill their bodies with food and their spirit with spiritual talks and discussion.

After the devotional we went to explore Kirkstall Abby in Leeds. Here's some pictures.

Movie Night at the Institute
The YSA wanted to watch Knight's Tale. I don't like the movie but everyone else seemed to enjoy it. We made Mike Golden's popcorn and that was a hit. Several stayed after to visit. I'm working hard at staying up later. It seems that's when they all want to talk.

Saturday Night Adventures after Howard Castle
The YSA have been trying to get us to eat at Nando Restaurant. We've eaten there in the DC area but decided to take a detour after our trip to York. We found a Nando that was on our way home. The food was good and we were right next to a big theater so we decided to make it a late night and see the movie Aladdin. We didn't get home until 11:00 p.m.

Sunday
Sunday we went to a big meeting at the Crossgate chapel. Two wards and one branch were being made into two new wards. The stake presidency and former bishops all spoke. Most knew the change was necessary. The branch and smaller ward were struggling. We met several YSA from the different wards and invited them to attend institute.

The geraniums down our street are getting fuller and bigger. I'm surprised because they don't get a lot of sun. There is plenty of rain though!

There truly is beauty all around. We don't have to look far to find it.
